How to Protect Your Pipes During Freezing Weather

June 22, 2026

When water freezes it expands, and that pressure can split a pipe wide open. A single burst pipe can cause thousands of dollars in water damage in minutes.

Before the Cold Hits

  • Insulate exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, and the garage
  • Disconnect garden hoses and shut off outdoor spigots
  • Seal drafts near pipes along exterior walls
  • Know where your main shut-off valve is in case of a burst

During a Cold Snap

  • Let faucets drip slightly to keep water moving
  • Open cabinet doors so warm air reaches pipes under sinks
  • Keep your heat on, even when away — never below 55°F

If a Pipe Freezes

Keep the faucet open and gently warm the pipe with a hair dryer or towels soaked in warm water. Never use an open flame. If you can't find the frozen spot or a pipe has already burst, shut off your water and call a plumber right away.
